Carcosa District. City 1

When i started to plan out my Carcosa District this was the first image of Michael Hutters I found and   along side his other work has shaped the final design. With the intention of a lot of tall buildings rather than ruins I wanted a relatively quick construction process as well and settled on card and paper mâché.

This was the first building and became the template for the others

Each building will have multiple points for walkways

The paper mâché has been deliberately wrinkled to add more texture to the final buildings

Bridge section reinforced with BBQ skewers

half a polystyrene ball for the dome

This will be one of the three towers for the Silent Tower scenario

The centre piece of the city will the Great Tower inspired by this M. Hutter piece

A big build at just over 21 inches high!

Some shots of the district so far, but still a lot to add before i start to paint!
Some of the buildings with get scaffolding similar to the great Tower. I have a couple more ruined buildings planned, the Well and some more wall sections. There is also the floor and all the walkways, some stone and some wooden and some dead tree/rocky outcrops for the ground level

Carcosa District - Frostgrave reimagined

At the height of its power the City of Felstad knew no limits and mighty sorcerers breached the walls of reality itself and began to explore other worlds and realities. Some were plundered for rare metals and jewels or strange beasts for the breeding pits and arenas. Beyond some gates the explorer mages were met with similar civilisations and the best of these permanent diplomatic relations were established and embassies granted within Felstad. Around each Embassy strange districts would emerge,  a blend of the two realms in culture and over time a blend of both realities. Some districts like Ur and Xennidhum were small and little more than way stations and trading points while others like Charn, Simmurad and Carcosa grew into thriving centres of their own, adding to the richness of the greater city around them.

When the fall came Carcosa District was one of the few regions that did not freeze in that first cold instant. The gateway to distant Hyades and the districts saturation of magic from being linked to Carcosa had granted some protection and as the ice sheet fell it paused at the districts edge like a glacial wall and its advance slowed to a crawl. Faced with the inevitable some chose to fight, encasing themselves in powerful wards and terrible Words. They advanced into the cold wall with their wands and staff flaming like blowtorches. The weakest merely stepped in and froze, while others managed some distance before they too failed and were lost.
The strongest were the Yellow Orders, great sorcerers and magic weavers from Carcosa and Felstad who had made the district their home. The Church of Transmogrification, The High Towerists, the Sons of Hastur,  and the Church of Dead Sun. They banded together and focuses their strength to pierce the wall and in arrogant procession they marched from the district. They lasted the longest and made it furthest, almost to the Weeping Willow Gate, but Felsteds curse would not be denied and one by one the sorcerers fell, burnt out by the effort and consumed until the last of the Orders banners fell and they were no more.
With the failure off the Yellow Orders, Carcosa ordered the gate to be closed, taking back its own citizens and a chosen few into exile.Abandoning the rest to their fate, despite their desperate pleas or hollow threats.
Of those that were left, some gave up just waited for the end, or lost themselves in each other, enchanted spells or delirious potion. A few of the powerful left retreated to their tall towers and deep Mausoleums, laying down fearsome counter charms and sorceries to protect and guard themselves, that they might endure the tide and emerge one distant day in its wake.
The rest went mad and gathered in the Hastur Square to a performance of the King in Yellow, a last revel and riot before the end

When the thaw came Carcosa District was among the first to emerge, its pale streets still embedded with the residue of distant stars and the madness of its final moments. It is a brave band that crosses over to explore its twisted streets and risk their lives and sanity for it lost wealth and power.

Ever since Frostgrave was released I have wanted to add it to my playlist. As a long time player of Mordheim, it offers an interesting twist on the urban skirmish game. I wanted to give it another twist and not just build another Mordheim and finally found my inspiration with the Cthulhu Mythos and the art of Michale Hutter.

Michael Hutter created a unique vision of the mythical city Carcosa from the Cthulhu Mythos which will be the inspiration for the Carcosa District which I will build around the scenarios of the core book but also for my own Carcosa campaign.

Erin. Half Dead

The Shaman Orthanach emerged from the thick fog that closed in around the small settlement.
He moved with clear purpose, his heavy shape in contrast to his quick movement. His dirty robes were still heavy with water and savoured the cold that surrounded him as he tasted the air and picked out the sounds of life ahead of him.
This was but the first small step but in his minds eye he could already see the fire and the fear and his plans unfolding.
The first of the low boundary stones that marked the edges of Whitewater village met him in the fog and he paused,

raising his claw he signalled behind and the white wall was cut again as more shapes emerged into the dusk light.
In their silence he could sense their muted screams, their riot of chained emotions, fear and loath, horror and rage, all channelled and aimed by his Will and Word.
The Half Dead would be the vanguard and the horror of their existence would add to the murder make, and in the Whitewaters death the Formorians would feast

I have begun work on the Erin Project and completed the first unit which were the last of the figures I had picked up before getting the starter set. These figures are the Half Dead, those who have been drowned or ambushed and kept in limbo and forced to fight again. These can be summoned to fight by the Formorians or the Fir Bolg  so plan on using them to support my shaman. i have also showcased these and progress on my Youtube channel:

Erin. Terrain 1

With the real world demanding my time i have not had al lot of time to build or paint. What time I have had usually leant itself to terrain work, easy builds and not much detail work so I can drop in and out etc.
I have also been watching season 1 of the Sky Series Britannia which is loosely based on the second Roman invasion of Britain and has added some inspiration

Abandoned village from Britannia

A couple of years ago I started on a Viking Saga project and repurposed the terrain for the Relics Orcnar. With the base terrain on the Erin Formorian I have gone over them again

The well was initially rebuilt as the Clear Water had dried and cracked. The well was removed and then reset with new Clear Water mixed with a dash of GW Coelia Greenshade. Moss was added and the base given a darker wetter look as well as adding some fallen leaves

A top stone was added to the carved stones and moss was added. The base was given the muddy look and leaves added

The smaller standing  stones were given new bases and moss

Stones and Formoran Shaman

i also picked up a set of the GW Walls and Fences. Extra detail was added with tufts, Ivy and fallen leaves

I wanted to keep them fairly generic so some bark was used to hide a tombstone detail

All new and updated terrain so far.

Start of some rock outcrops and another monument all made from tree bark

Erin. Starter Game Pack Video

Still high from painting my Formorian I took the plunge and picked up a copy of the Erin starter Game pack. I had been looking at this for some time (and also ticks my previous thoughts on playing Saga ) and also coincides with the start up of a new Facebook group Ancient 28 which is an off shot off the Inq28 scene and will explore bringing the narrative and Grimdark themes of the Inquisitor game into a more historical setting.
I had set up a Youtube channel for the blog some time ago and have decided to put it finally to use and for my first video I have done an unboxing of the Erin set and aim to use it and the Blog to chart my progress and eventually get some battle reports for the game.

Hope you enjoy.

Erin. Formorians

'A Fomori is a creature of the cold waters...'

The Fomori Shaman is one of those figures I have owned for an age, 20+ year it has moved from various store boxes and on and off my table but never got past an undercoat. It is a fantastic figure and one of my favourite sculpts but i could never find a paint scheme for it so it remained unused.
Recently I have had a surge in interest into Celtic Britain. I have started rereading Slaine Graphic novels and have started Bernard Cornwalls 'The Winter King'
On the crest of this inspiration I finally found the Formorian and spent a furious evening and early morning working on him.
For colours I wanted quite a soft earthy tones, his robes at odds with the rest of his appearance and drew on the palettes of Brian Froud, Stephen Reid and Alan Lee

Brian Froud

Alan Lee - Old Satyr

Stephen Reid - Finn Mccool Comes to Aid the Fianna

With the Shaman completed I have started work on some Half Dead...
