Relics. Battle Report - Defend the village

With the Orcnar Village wall finally complete, I have decided to build a couple of platforms I can stand against the inner walls and create firing (Grymman screaming!) steps but that will be for another day, and eager to get the terrain used I was able to arrange a game at my local club with bot the guys I have passed the Relics bug too. The battle was set with the Orcnar defending their homes against a combined Ridend and Vaettir assault.

Additional rules were decided for the walls, they would count as Obscuring for fire and if the walls were not being targeted any 1 or 2 hits would be taken against the wall section rather than the target. Walls would received a 4+ save and would have 6 damage points. The gate would have 8 damage points and it would take one round to open or close the gates and would need an Orcnar unit next to it to do so.

All packed and mobile!

Initial terrain set up

Orcnar forces - 2 Beorns, 2 Unmann units, 2 Eotans, 1 Spatga unit, 1 Docga unit and 2 Grumman units. Plus Orcnar Dice!

Ridend forces - 3 Archer units, 1 Foot Knight unit, 2 Barons, 1 Vassel Knights Formation ( 1 Ladies of the Court, 2 Foot Knight units)

Vaettir Forces - 2 units of Vicario, 1 unit of Sol, 1 unit of Vstonin, 2 Elvspon, 1 Evocatour and 1 Vaelad ( proxy with an Infinity figure as the miniatures are currently out of stock and I need to assembly mine!) Plus Vaettir Dice!

Orcnar set up first with the Ridend taking the northern edge and the Vaettir taking the west.

Grymman units decided to take up positions outside the walls to act as guerrilla forces and maximise their ranged attacks. They also thought it would be finny not to come in when told and ran off in hysterics and hid in the hunt ruins!

The Vaettir began their advance and the Vicar cast Iced Ground on the (badly) hiding Grymman and limiting their hit-and-run intentions!

The Grymman withdrew and successful survived more elemental assault, but from fire this time

The other Grymman unit weathered an arrow storm which took two of their number as they moved out of cover to close into range and also back into command range to allow them to make aimed shots later.

With the gates still open and the Sol closing in, the Docga are unleashed but despite their best efforts only inflict one point of damage

One of the Unmann units is called to take over the gate defence and

The Beorn follows after the Docga against the Sol

The Grymman counter attack the Ridend and kill two of the Ladies.

The remaining ladies retreats behind her protective Knights

Despite the loss of the Ladies, the Ridend continue their steady advance, archers inflicting casualties on the defending Unmann units behind the walls and weaken the wall itself (dark stone mark the section damage)

A final volley from the archers brings down the wall section and knights move towards the breach as the Orcnar inside move to defend with the huge Eotans and Spatga open fire to try and reduce the breaching forces.

A unit of Knights moves to support the Vaettir as the Sol and Docga trade blows. The rest of the Vaettir forces move in under the cover of the conflict.

Overview of the battle so far.
we ran out of time and will resume next week!

Relics. Orcnar.Spatga and Grymman

With the completion of the Orcnar village I have been able to resume work on the troops and move towards and a fully painted force. To add some range attacks to the Orcnar I have added one unit of Spatga. I picked up one Spatga as part of a job lot and in the first edition the unit was a single figure rather than two so I made a second figure using Instamold and GS as they can only be bought in twos now.The figures have been painted up with a change from the Unmann and Eotans but with similar earthy tones to keep a unified look.

Spatga will launch long range vomit attacks. They will be overfed and bloated before battles which is why they do not wear the usual tribal stones

To add some more range I have added the Grymman. The Grymman sculpts have a real sense of character and as they are mainly multipart which gives them an opportunity for conversion and reposing. The figures remind me of Gremlins and I had originally intended to paint them an a similar way, but found that they did not fit in with the wider colour scheme so after looking over the figures again I settled on a pattern based on Hyenas which seemed to suit the figures and character far better

The original Grey Grymman just before they fell to Ridend Knights

The finished Grymman pack.
Because of their hyperactive nature, the Grymman do not wear any tribal stone. Their sonic scream attacks tend to shatter any stones they wear over time as well!

The completed Stone Branch so far. Next is to finish off the Unmann and Docga units and bring them up to full strength before I start on the Beorns.

Relics. Orcnar Terrain 4 - Stone Branch Village

The Village for the Stone Branch Orcnar Tribe has finally reached an ending.
This has been my largest terrain piece and have been working on it on and off since last September and had an extra glitch when the paint I had been using was discontinued! The brown had been a Java Brown from Wilko but I was able to sort out a close match using Dulux colour match service!
But I am very pleased to have reached a level of playable completion. I plan to go back at various points and add more details, objects and debris around the huts and maybe some glyphs, a skin frame and trophy skulls. I will also be adding a alternate centrepiece, a rock outcrop with a tree on the top ( exposed roots bonsai style ) with a stone branch.

Gates closed

Top view of empty village. The green mat is a Games Workshop battle mat and I wanted the inside worn. I made a flexible canvas mat in the enclosure shape using the technique on this blog (http://tobispaintpot.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-new-horizon-tutorial-for-flexible.html ) as i did not need a whole landscape I used a blank Picture canvas from the Works, painting it on the frame and then cutting it out afterwards removed the need to pin it to avoid shrinkage.

The village is ready to play and should be getting its debut at my local club ( Barb's Models and Games, Redruth, Cornwall) next week, my besieged Orcnar against a combined Vaettir and Ridend assault!

Relics. Twigs, Troopers and St Nik

It has been quite a while since my last post. Work has been very demanding and the majority of my scant hobby time has been spent on woodwork for the Orcnar stockade

The remaining walls completed with the front parts to make a breached wall section.
To celebrate

Spiked gateway

To celebrate the assembly I finished off the Britanan St Nik character and a test trooper ( i had already had too much brown and needed a change!)

I had considered painting in lines to give a stronger canvas affect but settled on a simpler  style to give more focus on the stitching

Painted in standard Red and white, I plan on giving other units different coloured edging to the jackets and cuffs

St Nik was a fun figure to paint, loads of detail on his face and real sense of movement to the sculpt as he swings his bag of bits around

Next will be the grand browning of the Stockade walls and then to alternate between Orcnar and Britanan units for a bit to bring them up to the same strength as my C'thu.
