Bloodbath. The Engineers of Osrim Chardz. P2

Continuing with my BloodBath challenge I have finished off Osrim Chardz

I was a bit daunted to paint him initially as he is one of my rarest/most expensive figures and one of the principle characters in the scenario.
Based on Lieutenant John Chards the Royal Engineer who commanded the Defence of Rorkes Drift, the figure graces the box cover and is a highly detailed sculpt.
As with all my characters, I have raised him up a bit and decided on sticking with his cover paint scheme. Purely by chance (or subliminally with the box art on my painting table) the blue i had chosen for the other dwarf units as the League colours (GW Thunderhawk Blue) works perfectly for his cloak and ties him in with the rest of the units.
The sculpt itself matches up with the Gary Chalk artwork (but reversed when used on the box)

Bloodbath. The Dwarfs of Ashak Rise. P2

Looking back over the blog and it was Oct 2018 that I last posted on my Bloodbath at Orcs Drift Project and unfortunatly I had done little else since then.
Distracted by numerous other projects, the figures did little more than move around my painting list and sit accusingly on the back of my desk. But as the end of this year approached I had a burst of guilt fuelled inspiration to try and get at least these finished and complete my second Command Sheet

This was the state of play late December, with ten still to paint and six done, although I was no longer happy with them which I think contributed to my avoidance.

I started reworking the initial six and gave them a new livery which I was much happier with and inspired me to work on the rest.

The crossbow dwarves were painted up in the new livery. The crossbows were modified Empire crossbows

The first of my Bloodbath character figures. Borinn Fimbul and his son Snorinn Fimbul.
Both figures are packed with extra details and a joy to paint

This took me up to the end of the year and only the pack mules left to do frustratingly!

All painted and my second Command Sheet completed!

Still on a dwarf high, I have started the next Command Sheet which will be The Engineers of Osrim Chardz. This is also small unit and will be another repaint and paint. It also contains Osrim Chardz himself which was a limited Scenario release and is quite a rare/expensive figure.

AA.Iron Guard reboot

They call themselves the Iron guard, the Lords the Pillar Mountains and Wardens of the Redwall. They call themselves Dwarfbane and forge breakers. They took the city of Ruknaast and made it their own. They took our armour and twisted it to their own. They took the Red Mines and made them their own.
Though are kin are no more their oaths will not be forgotten.

The Drunaad Book of Grudges.

A creature is at its most dangerous when it is cornered and fighting for its life. For the Goblins of the Black Beetle tribe it was certainly true. The tribe had been driven from their lands by the expanding conflict between Orcs and men and their migration took them to the foothills of the Pillar Mountains where they encountered the dwarf city of Ruknaast.
Ruknaast lay within the base of Mount Rukk with its fortified entrance opening out onto a broad valley  which was closed off by a wall of lesser mountains with a narrow gorge which  led out of the mountains onto the plains beyond the foothills. The gorge was defended by another wall and gateway, the Redwall.

It was to the Redwall that the ragged caravan emerged and in the failing daylight the dwarven guards mistook them for dwarven refugees. Hidden beneath rags and carrying what little they had fled with, it was an easy mistake to make but one that would cost them dearly. The gates were opened and the needy were welcomed in, but as the first caravan passed under the gateway torchlight revealed the truth.
The Goblins had sworn that they wouldn’t be defeated and driven out again and their desperation had made them fierce and even as the guards rushed to close the gates they knew it was already to late. The tribe poured through the gates like a filthy green tide and then flooded on into the valley, already screaming their victory.

As one they charged into the valley and from their lines their bird riders emerged and took the lead, the element of surprise still with them as their manic charge took them to the gates of Ruknaast before it could be closed.
Without the sounding of Redwall bell, the Doors of Ruknaast lay open and to the last bird the goblins held the great doors open until the main horde arrived and took the fight into the city proper.

The Halls and corridors became choked with dwarf and goblin dead, but step by step the dwarfs were forced back until at last only the throne room remained unbroken. It was here they made their last stand.
King Athel Baranson and his Hearthguard faced the fury of Chief Fannag atop his giant stag beetle steed Unger.
Like an Obsidian steam tank, Unger drove deep into the Hearthguard and laid waste to them while above it Fannag spun around and danced to cut and parry each blow that might have struck Unger.
The Hearthguard fell to the fury of the giant war beetle  and Unger cleared a way on to the throne where Chief  Fannag flung himself down upon King Athel following his spear. King Athel saw him leap and met the shaft, turning it aside with a swung of his  great axe. But Fannag was fast and cunning and as the spear was pushed aside he released it and kicked himself off into the kings exposed side with his dagger.
King Athel felt the blade slip deep between plate and rib, and his eyes grew dark while the last of his kin fell beneath the shadow of Unger.

Ruknaast had fallen and Goblins began to rebuild and make it their own,  the taste of defeat and desperate flight,  how close they had come to destruction ever present on their minds and shaped the decisions of those first new years.
The goblins took the mines and forges and as the dwarfs before them, a love of iron.To better stand against all foes they remade themselves into the Iron Guard, armour clad as their totem Beetle and an echo of the fallen hearthguard.
Redwall was renewed and raised high, clad in iron plate and spike.

Ever since I painted up the first of my Iron Guard I had a niggling in my creative head, whenever i put together a force I like to have a backstory and setting for them, but they had been left hanging with what felt like the remains of what i could remember from my childhood incarnation of them. With the Bolt Thrower crew on my painting table I had a good prompt to revise them properly. I wanted to give them a place and also a reasons for their armour. The new story for them touches on the reasons, their defeat and flight and then victory over the dwarfs of Ruknaast shaping of the tribes desire to remake itself and take on dwarven influences.

With the new story i looked again at those i had already painted and although I liked the white I felt it wasn't quite Goblin enough. For my colour palette i tend to avoid red as it can be an easy go to colour but in this case felt it worked perfectly.
Hooked on Game of Thrones the armour of House Lannister looks quite similar to the Iron Guard so I settled on keeping the armour but painting the skirts as deep red leather and the sashes a brighter red.

Completed Bolt Thrower and crew.
I have added a cable to the Bolt thrower and given the spotter a telescope

the Bolt thrower is a lovely sculpt with lots of skull details on the machine and the base which
 I left as carved wood

The completed Tower. The top has Iron Guard shields (made with Green Stuff) to help tie it in with the rest of the army and the Iron Guard banner with the banner of the Redwall unit, a stylised portcullis.
The tower will be pushed into battle by a bigger beast, possibly an ogre or troll so on the look out for a suitable figure.

Bloodbath. The Dwarfs of Ashak Rise.P1

Taking advantage of some extra hobby time and the buzz from completing the Vile Rune Orks I have moved on to the next Command sheet and the Dwarfs of Ashak Rise which I had previously started.

This one of the smallest groups and is only 15 figures, 11 dwarf clansmen, two characters and three pack mules.

The first job was to rebase the dwarfs as they had been placed on round bases which had been used before I decided on original bases, and then to to retouch the six dwarfs I had already painted. It also gave me an opportunity to revise some of the colours and go for a more sober look and bring the base style in line with the Orcs, although for the forces of good the bases will be a little more alive with green rather than brown foliage.

Tzeentch. Thosim Farsight

Cast out because of his visions of battle and blood, the Dwarf Thosim was lost unto the wilderness until the Great Changer revealed Himself unto Thosim and brought him peace. A pact was struck and the Changer took him eyes that he might see clearly his visions, his inner eye open to what will be not what is. Thosim now moves into his sight and into alignment.
His great axe and eye brought into service to our Church.

I have the bad habit of starting to many projects, and planning many more in my head, though this might just be that I don't have time to do all that want or can imagine!
Some of the ideas get written down, to picked up a some point maybe, and others I start to gather in project boxes and usually start them when they hit critical mass or tie in with a particular mood or event such as my Necromunda Brat gang which I had been slowly adding too over several year and finally had enough to field a whole gang for BOYL.
One of the long term boxes is for a Tzeentch chaos warband, very much a Realm of Chaos creation but with a AOS28 edge.
After picking up a couple of Marauder chaos dwarfs in a recent job lot I added them to the box and realised it had reached a point to start some time ago

Amongst the collection are Tzeentch Deamons and Horrors, Chaos marauders and hounds, Beastmen, Familiars and the Regiment of Renown, The Disciples of the Red Redemption as well as figures from the Pantheon of Chaos Kickstarter.

My aim for the warband is to draw inspiration from the Realms of Chaos books and also AOS28, a more GrimDark vision of the Age of Sigmar.  A focus on each figure with each one being converted. This will be an opportunity for me to stretch my converting and Green Stuff skills and painting.

The first choice is one of the marauder Dwarfs which I have reshaped his helmet to cover his face and added a pair of antlers from the Sylvaneth Tree-revenant box. He will also have one of the shields from the Pantheon of Chaos.

With quite a blocky figure i didn't want to do too much and over do it but rather let the paintwork be the focus.

My idea was to go with a pale bone armour and have echoes of a Pink Horror but with elements of blue to keep it more Tzeentch rather than Slaanesh.

Dwarf's dig in!

I had not intended to start a dwarf army, not out of any particular issue with the little guys but I just have other races higher up the list! However that list has become undone somewhat by my Bloodbath at Orc's Drift project which once I have all the figures will give me a Dwarf, Orc and Elf force as well as more humans. As part of the Dwarf force I managed to pick up a Dwarf cannon and crew for a couple pounds on Ebay, thinking that if i do want to field them at some point they will want a bit of clout! A bit of a weak justification for adding to my already looming Lead/plastic mountain, but I have used worse!
Being the professionals that they are, I thought the crew would want to defend their artillery and started work on an entrenchment between repainting them.

The two hill sections were made of polystyrene and then whole piece was covered with NoMoreNails to seal them and add texture. While the adhesive was dating i also added the wooden walls and platform which were made from slices of lollypop sticks.

Finally sandbags were added. The sandbags are made by Pegasus Hobbies.
Once the NoMore had dried, I usually leave it overnight, I added sand and Gravel using PVA glue and  sealed it all with another layer of PVA/Water.

The entrenchment was then painted using GW paints and greenery added. I had thought about leaving it all muddy but i like the contrast between the two sides and I can add the flowers which are a little signature on the bases of 'Good' figures.

The Cannon is all finished and just the crew to add..

Note: I have made a point of not adding too much detail, graffiti, abandoned shields etc so i can use it for other forces or my 40K game.
